Name Magee, Jessie June Flanagan
Notes Jessie June Flanagan Magee (Mrs. Walter Varney Magee) was born in Steubenville, Ohio. When she was a child, her family moved to Wheeling, West Virginia. She attended West Liberty State College in West Virginia and Kent State University in Ohio, and taught elementary and junior high school. She married in 1923 and moved to Lakewood, Ohio where she began her club career as a member of the Woman's Club of Lakewood.

From there, Magee served as president of the Federation of Women's Clubs of Greater Cleveland and organized and presided over the Radio Council of Cleveland. She was elected state president of the Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs in 1952. During her administration as state president, the Ohio Federation added 198 clubs.

Magee served as chairman of GFWC's Community Affairs Department and the full range of national offices before being elected as GFWC President in 1968.

During her term, Jessie June Magee's theme was "Individual Involvement," which encouraged clubwomen to become involved in activities ranging from voting in the presidential election to taking a more active role in promoting positive content in television shows and movies. The "V" for volunteer was initiatied as a logo during her administration.

Magee began the practice of printing pocket-sized statements of GFWC policies and programs, published a booklet with the history of GFWC, and had the first postcard of the GFWC Headquarters building printed. In 1969, Magee led a NATO Study Mission Tour that attended the Brussels Conference and visited eight NATO countries.

She died November 30, 1984.
