The Centennial Study Club, Cosmopolitan Club, and Reader's Guild, Oxford, Mississippi, Community Improvement Program project, 1962-1964, was to relocate a "beautiful and historic antebellum home to be used as a cultural civic center for our community and a permanent headquarters for an annual Pilgrimage." This project included organizing the pilgrimage for April 17-19, 1964.
To successfully complete this project, the clubs worked extensively with the community, including the local newspaper, radio station, police, and government to raise much needed support and funds. Both the home and its new site were donated by individuals. Relocation required the cooperation of three utility companies as well as the State Highway Department. The project succeeded in saving a piece of local history from demolition, and provided the town with a new cultural civic center.
The project records include detailed project narrative, newspaper clippings, photographs, artwork, and correspondence. The Centennial Study Club, Cosmopolitan Club, and Reader's Guild entered this project in the GFWC Community Improvement Program for 1962-1964.
